“I created this album at the height of my depression. After years of not being able to create anything. This album is dedicated to my cousin who passed three years ago. Bringing mental health to the forefront; the impact of anxiety, depression, and stress in one” – S.V.
A creative soul at heart finding pleasure in artistic endeavours – S.V. tackles tragedies with an intimate rawness on his new upcoming album release, harnessing his internal emotions and exploring how his own sensitivity can make his art flourish, wearing sentimentality brazenly on his sleeves as he delves into the depths of his own consciousness. One of his main hobbies that influenced this work is clothing design. He says “If a piece isn’t interesting to look at, I would have to redesign it” to express his growing tiredness of the monotonous design of the modern men’s fashion circles. Usually donning his very own designs instead, S.V. likes challenging himself to create. He comes from a background of globe-trotting travel, as he has lived in Germany, London, Ghana and New York. Furthermore, his travels to China in his more recent years, to be a music producer, has found S.V. continuing to work with a wide range of Korean and Japanese acts now.
‘Questions (Can U)’ – the lead single of his new solo LP – has a woeful, airy and radiant air about its electronic-based production in the studio, and this serves to be an interesting juxtaposition to the harder subject matter of the lyrics. The subtle sounds of the Piano arrangement and the Lo-Fi keys add a comforting layer of intimacy to the vocals, effectively heightening the effect of the words being used. Though filled with questions, the subtext indicates that S.V. clearly knows – and has made peace with – the fact that there may not always be an answer to his concerns. The lyrics are constantly pleading with a persona, and they use an intimate whisper to represent the ultimate feelings of longing in anticipation. S.V. has captured these feelings woven amongst the lyrics using a masterful subtlety.
“Creating music came to me in many different forms. It could be a melody that comes to me sitting with my plants, reading my books, playing around on my guitars, or going through old records, and getting inspired by an old tune. I then get behind my production station and compose what ideas I have. Adding sounds that feel right to the track and arrange it in an emotional way. Musical instruments have a special place in my heart, they give voice to the voiceless and are limitless in emotions. Whether it be a happy track, giving it the energy, it needs to capture the vibe in an instant or emotional, drawing the listener in with slow Piano and verse. I like every lyric to feel as part of me as possible” – S.V.
