Nerika’s Bachelor is this week’s Sound of the Underground track

Bouncing and grooving, Nerika’s upbeat anthem Bachelor is this week’s Sound of the Underground track.

Full of fearless female talent, Nerika is truly a force to be reckoned with. The young artist is a Brooklyn-based Caribbean singer-songwriter, whose flair is unmatched and vibe immaculate.

An artist unafraid of pushing the boundaries of genre, Nerika combines all the best sounds from the Pop, R&B and Dancehall genres into a sound that is well and truly her own.

We caught up with Nerika to find out a little more about her.

How did you get started in Music?

“I’ve been pretty artistic ever since I can remember – singing, dancing, writing, acting out stories etc. As a kid and even now, I’ve always been entertained by my own mind. I rarely ever got bored and was constantly zoning out, living elsewhere.”

Who or what has influenced your sound?

“Being Jamaican-American and born in the suburbs of New Hampshire, I grew up listening to a lot of old school reggae but simultaneously fell in love with Pop icons such as Beyonce, Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys, and the soundscapes of Alternative Rock/Pop Punk.

From middle school to high school I studied jazz and classical music and continue to draw from all of my different influences. For the longest time, I was really embarrassed because I didn’t like things that were stereotypically black, but now I think it’s super dope to have eclectic taste and realised there’s literally no right way to express yourself as long as it’s honest.”

When do you feel most inspired to make Music?

“Because my mind is often filled with jumbled thoughts I often find peace in silence. Early mornings and late nights are when I’m most inspired because I can actually hear myself think in the stillness. I’m also really in tune with my sense of space, energy, and visuals. Coincidently, since quarantine, I’ve been tapping back into video editing which allows me to harness some of my core qualities. It’s also something I used to do as a child. Revisiting the foundational parts of myself that have made me who I am today is an unexplainable feeling. That’s at least one good thing I can thank 2020 for.”

How did you create Bachelor? Was it a solo venture?

“I made “Bachelor” with one of my best friends that I met in New York, Austin Crute. I came up with the hook which was inspired by a Jamaican phrase my cousin used to say as a kid “Bachelor come falla back a mi” and then he started to produce the beat around that. It’s always super easy with him because he knows what I like. Working with friends feels really good and can sometimes create the best art.”

Nerika is a hugely exciting talent bursting on to the scene, her style and sound is a truly unique accumulation of musical influences.

Drawing inspiration from the world around her, Nerika becomes a stand-out artist on the music scene in 2020.

So what’s next for the talented Nerika?

“Right now I’m more inspired than ever. I have so many ideas, new songs, and projects that are still in the creation stage that I won’t go into detail about, but I’ve found so many amazing collaborators over social media which has been super dope. Right now, I’m just focused on creating quality content that I love. I believe in divine timing and will release more when the time feels right…soon of course, but I’m trusting the process.”
